Currently in France there are 450 plants wich produce 1,832 GWh of biogas per year.

In France a feed-in tariff for electricity is available for biogas plants with CHP production since 2006. The gas grid injection is possible in our country since 2011. A new feed-in tariff has been developed at the end of 2016 for CHP < 500 kWe and regarding biggest plants : they have to sell their electricity on the market and get additional compensation. The most dynamic sectors are farms and sewage sludge treatment plants.

RAEE (Auvergne Rhône-Alpes)

In the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region, there are 72 plants which produce:

  • 187 261 MWh electricity
  • 20 843 MWh biomethane
  • 74 978 MWh thermal

In 2016, RAEE has implemented different actions within the work packages of the Biogas Action project:

WP2Tools for Successful Regional Biogas Initiatives and Deployment:

  • Creation of the biogas webpage on the new RAEE internet portal dedicated to renewable energies in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region
  • RAEE identified French tools to be compiled in an international book
  • The Terragreau’s biogas plant (74) has been detailed as an innovative plant in the international brochure published by EBA

WP3 Intervention in Target Countries/Regions

  • Writing and publishing (with AILE) a guide on the topic “financing biogas projects”, downloadable from RAEE website (target : project owners and financiers)
  • Writing and publishing a guide on the topic “Setting up an agricultural biofuel station”, downloadable from RAEE website (target : project owners and projects advisers)
  • Organization of two meetings of the biogas advisory committee. First meeting in May 2016 gathering 60 participants, the goal of this meeting was to allow the companies, public institutions and project owners (all working in the field of biogas) to meet and share experience. This half day meeting was really successful. The second meeting in December 2016 was hosted by a company Serge Ferrari specialised in composite material technology and gathered 30 participants; the meeting was concluded with a site visit of the company which was of great interest for everyone. RAEE has done the promotion of the “Biogas Action” project during this two meetings
  • Working on 2 pilot projects : with a farmer on his territorial project : 40,000 tons, 225 Nm3h and with a local authority : on specific part of the business how to sell and buy biomethane
  • With AILE, at the biogas Europe Fair in January 2016, RAEE organised a conference on biomethane transported by trucks and gas collection by trucks to a shared injection box (150 attendees)
  • With ADEME : at the POLLUTEC fair, RAEE has made a presentation on the same topic, in December 2016 (40 attendees)

WP4 Networking & Replication

  • At national level, RAEE as member of “Club biogaz” participates in a workshop to implement a new feed-in tariff for biomethane not injected.
  • RAEE is also member of a national workshop on gas grid injection

WP5 Dissemination & Communication

  • Continually promoting Biogas Actions throughout various meetings or conferences (at national, regional and European levels) : In January 2017 at the  biogas Europe Fair RAEE has organised a conference on Biomethane last developments : (200 attendees)
  • Contribution to articles in national media (ex: bioénergie international, Magazine ENTRAID….)

AILE (Brittany/Pays de la Loire)

In Brittany and Pays de la Loire there are :

  • 110 units with biogas valorisation, including 80 farm scale and centralized biogas plants;
  • 256 GWh electricity produced;
  • 330 GWh heat produced;
  • 11 GWh biométhane injected by 2 biogas plants

In 2016, AILE has implemented different actions within the work packages of the Biogas Action project:

WP2 – Tools for successful regional biogas initiatives and deployment:

  • AILE identified French and regional tools to be compiled in an international book
  • The biogas plant “AGRIBIOMETHANE”, located in Mortagne-Sur-Sèvre (85) has been detailed as an innovative plant in the international brochure published by EBA

WP3 – Intervention in target countries / regions

  • Writing and publishing (with RAEE) a guide on the topic “financing biogas projects”, downloadable from AILE’s website (target : project owners and financers)
  • Steering committee was held in Brittany and in the Pays de la Loire region to discuss policy change after election of the last year and the impact of the energy transition law
  • Organising an advisory committee for biomethane injection key actors in Brittany and Pays de la Loire (80 attendees)
  • With RAEE, at the biogas Europe Fair in January 2016, RAEE organised a  conference on biomethane transported by trucks and gas collection by trucks to a shared injection box (150 attendees)
  • Organizing 1 training day about biology optimization (12 attendees)
  • Assistance has been given to 3 biogas projects facing issues : AILE has spent time to assist project developer to mobilize farmers.
  • With RAEE, at the biogas Europe Fair in January 2016, RAEE organised a  conference on biomethane transported by trucks and gas collection by trucks to a shared injection box (150 attendees)
  • Continually promoting Biogas Actions throughout AILE is a member of the national “Club Biogaz” and participates to a working group about digestate regulation
  • AILE works with the national French Association “AAMF” (Association des Agriculteurs Methaniseurs de France)

WP5- networking and replication

  • Continually promoting Biogas Actions throughout various media : AILE’s website, newsletter, press articles…
